I started watching the Jimmy Awards a few years ago, once I started competing at my regional theater, which is the Paper Mill Playhouse in New Jersey. Looking at this list confirms something I've known, which is that New Jersey does not participate in the Jimmy Awards due to the costs of the program. Despite that, the Jimmy Awards provides a great educational access to 58 different Regional theaters across the country, exposing kids to theater education and access in the big city of New York. For the past 17 years, the Jimmy Awards have also helped people get a name in this industry, benefiting jobs, and helping people find new sources of income to benefit themselves and their long-term career goals. Regardless of whether you are the lucky winner or not, the Jimmy Awards have benefitted around 10% of their alumni, helping them book Broadway shows and National Tours, proving that the exposure the Jimmy’s provides has been helpful. Regardless of who wins or loses, the Jimmy’s seem like a great opportunity to network, learn from great talent, and get exposure that wouldn’t have been possible otherwise.
Last year I really enjoyed watching the Jimmy's, it was my first time ever watching because I had transferred to a new school that brought students to one of the Jimmy qualifying places and knew one of the girls performing. At my school before this I had never given a single thought to the Jimmys because I barely knew it was a thing. It’s kinda sad that the funding of my old school couldn’t afford it as well as the fact that not a single qualifying place is in the state of Maryland so we would have to travel to a whole new state. I wish that this could be something more accessible to people with all different backgrounds and funding because there are people at my school who I think are very talented, and good enough to do something like the Jimmys. I know this isn’t really a problem that can be fixed but it is just a little sad.
