I’m always interested to see instances of lighting artists who start their own companies or join a company where they can continue to work creatively and not exclusively on corporate events. I also really appreciate learning about the career paths of lighting and production artists, since they often take very unique shapes; it reassures me that I can always find a path forward even if in the moment things feel uncertain. As someone who is very excited to get my hands on GrandMA soon and is potentially interested in being an MA programmer at least for some part of my career, it was very cool to hear that Altmark based a good chunk of his early career on his MA knowledge and skills. I was curious about the time Altmark spent while finishing his BFA at CalArts working at SJ Lighting, so I took a look at their webpage and saw that they have some current jobs available. One point of interest about their Project Assistant position—which seems like something I would potentially be interested in following graduation—was that along with the more typical desired skills like proficiency in Vectorworks, Office, etc., they also are looking for someone who can do “basic game development in Unreal Engine 4.” This is something I’ve been thinking about with regards to lighting a lot recently since I had to learn Capture for Lighting Technology, because I kinda hate Capture and I’m constantly like, I feel like this could be done better in a game development engine.
