King Kong Climbing the Empire State Building Recreated With a Stunning Drone Show
laughingsquid.com: Studio Hock very accurately recreated the iconic scene from King Kong where the giant ape climbed the Empire State Building using lightweight drones, precise positioning, and timing. The wind and cold from the height of the building, the general business of Manhattan, and the magnetic fields from surrounding steel structures made this feat rather difficult, but it worked beautifully nonetheless.

I’ve always thought that drone shows have been really cool to try and program and create. I suppose drone shows are a form of scenic design in a manner of outdoor live entertainment to create the atmosphere of the location. I’m really curious about the programming of these sorts of drones, could you program like movers and give them focus pallets to specific locations on a grid? Thought I have never seen a software like EOS or other lighting programing softwares that would be able to program something in any more than an X and Y area, I have never seen something be able to go into the Z axis, though with encoders like some EOS boards have, I have to believe that its possible on that sort of system. I love the three dimensionality of something like drones that give something so much more depth than just projections, though I still have to wonder would drones be under lighting design? Scenic design? Or would that go under the umbrella of “media” in video and media design perhaps?
I still go back and forth on what I think about drone art. As a premise I think it is fascinating and really cool to both design and watch, I am still a lover of fireworks and laser shows. As a kid I grew up going to disney and ballgames and seeing the fantastic firework shows they would put on and I remember how mesmerizing it was. Drone shows just do not have that same feeling as fireworks to me but perhaps that is because I did not grow up with them. However, I think that drones are a great innovation because they are capable of doing things that fireworks could never do, they also are superior to lasers because they do not require a surface outside of the sky. Drones have the ability to tell a much more detailed and vivid story with less requirements like King Kong climbing the Empire State Building, I am interested to see where this new form of art goes.
WOW!! I love drones! They are such an interesting concept and idea! I was first introduced to the idea of drone shows as a replacement for fireworks in areas where fireworks are not allowed or as a sensory friendly version of fireworks, which I love! Do not get me wrong, I thing that drone fireworks are not the same as the real thing, but they do well to mimic. However, I really love that drones have found their own niche that no one can take or claim because no other technology has the ability to have floating balls of light form 3 dimensional shapes and move like that. There are many set backs to drones as well. Not all cities allow drones to fly in their city centers. They are sometimes noisy, but I think this has been getting better with each iteration of drones. I think drones are definitely disturbing the market, and I can’t wait to see what they do next!
I love looking at innovative new technologies like this. Don’t get me wrong, I love traditional lighting design and scenic design, but i definitely like relatively new inventions like lasers shows and drone shows and animatronics and projection design. I hope that the next big thing is holograms so we can project 3D things into space. I think there could be a way to do it by shooting two lasers and having them intersect at a point, then making the object out of all of these points. The laser beams could be so tiny or dim that they aren’t visible until they intersect with each other, then they’re visible. I bet that some similar technology as the robosoot could be used to triangulate the correct direction of the two lasers. Holograms could be so cool in theater. I wonder if there has been much work on making them a reality. They are sucha big sci fi thing, it would be great to see them in real life. They could also replace drone shows like. These.
This is honestly pretty awesome. I've never been too keen on drones because well, they are drones. Hate it when someone won't stop droning on about drones (laugh out loud). BUT i just found them always kinda of a bit unnecessary, like why are we so fascinated with these drones. I never understood the sole recreational use of drones. Like if you're at the beach and you see some random adult giggling as they control their drone so it can fly over the whole beach.. Like dude what are you doing… on a separate note i think drones are one hundred percent worth it in film, i love a good drone shot that speeds up and slows down, drones can produce some very intricate camera work. I think this article shows some really cool drone art, which i've never even seen before because of my natural reluctant feelings towards drones. I think this is a very clever image that comes off as very effective, i love how robotic king kong moves as well. It is cute.
I think drones are super cool and have a lot of new really exciting applications for them. I see them all around now, and can barely remember a time when drones were commonplace. However, I have really loved watching people push the boundaries of what you can do with drones and to make drone shows even more spectacular and fun to watch. This performance is a great example of what people can do with technology when they have a super creative and constructive mind. I would love to see behind this scenes for this performance and all the preparation and skill that went into pulling it off. I am sure there are so many different aspect that you have to coordinate that we barely even think about. Overall, this is super exciting performance to read about and I would like to know more about the process that it took to pull it off. Additionally, I am starting to think about how drones could be used in theatre in any form or fashion and what that might look like in the future.
