Buena Vista Social Club sold millions of records; now their story is on Broadway

NPR: The Buena Vista Social Club were artists who'd been all but lost to the world after the Cuban Revolution — until they united for a 1997 album. Now, their unlikely story takes a new stage: Broadway.

I was really excited to hear about this musical! I am definitely one of the gringos guilty of listening to Buena Vista Social Club devoid of its original context as mentioned in the article; I only found out about the story behind the group a few months ago. I really like the idea that though the musical diverges from reality, the underlying emotions and themes are joined. It’s really cool that this musical accomplishes that by utilizing the actual songs of Buena Vista Social Club; as Ramirez says, the songs are not pushing the story forward, it’s the story that is pushing the songs forward. I can think of few projects that take this unique outlook on musical theatre. This musical is also particularly relevant to me because I am currently working on a project for my foundations of drama class about a different musical deeply entertwined with Cuban culture, Anna in the Tropics by Nilo Cruz (the same playwright as Lorca in a Green Dress!), and I could definitely see myself mentioning this show in my presentation about that.
