The Beatles' 'Now and Then' Was Made With AI (and That's Okay)

Lifehacker: I happened to catch some of the Grammy Awards last night, and while pop, rap, and country definitely took center stage, it was the Best Rock Performance category that most caught my attention. The award went to The Beatles for their song "Now and Then," which is a confusing sentence in 2025. You might be aware The Beatles operated largely in the 1960s, not the 2020s, and seeing as only half the group is still alive, winning a Grammy for a new song might sound a bit strange.

I’m glad to see people recognizing that ai has some morally good uses and it isn’t as clear as ai good or ai bad. Ai can be helpful in ways that don’t do harm and can be a useful tool in creative spaces without kicking out artists from said space. I feel like ai itself isn’t the problem however the way we choose to use it is what brings up problems for others, the way ai was used in this instance is a really good example of the good that ai has the capability of doing which is really interesting since it helped in terms of reviving a song(usually ai garners a very strong negative reaction when in relation to music which is fair since more and more ai computer music is gaining traction). A band as huge as the Beatles would never tarnish their legacy by releasing an ai song so I thought it was a no brainer that this wasn’t ai generated however I can see why people would be scared that it was.

AI is always a controversial topic, especially in the artistic fields. I was also surprised to hear about the Beatles using AI I guess I assumed that it was AI generated when the use of AI was mentioned, but using AI to clean audio and produce a song makes more sense. Machine learning is a useful tool and despite the recent AI craze, it has been around for a good while. I think it is a good tool to use for music production, AI is also an interesting new tool, but only if the artists who use it acknowledge that the product isn’t something purely created by them but also by the computer. A world where all new music is created by a computer is a depressing thought to me as I see music as one of the most powerful connecting forces in the universe. I doubt there will stop being human-generated music anytime soon, but I hope that as time marches on we can still call music one of the most influential mediums created by HUMANS.

I really liked this example of how AI has actual helpful uses for modern life, and it isn't just a way to get out of reading and writing papers for your first year writing class. Machine learning has been around for a pretty long time, and has been used to do a lot of really helpful things that humans just aren't as good at, which in my opinion is exactly what new technology should be used for. No one is clamoring for humans to replace machines that do things like build up crystals one layer at a time, because humans are just really bad at things like that while more artificial processes are much better. The problem with AI is that people are trying to get robots to do a worse job of something that humans can already do, and do better. So I’m glad that the Beatles used this music to finish this song from John Lennon.
