Styling the Swans

Columbia College Today: The 2024 FX limited series Feud: Capote Vs. The Swans is about friendship, fame and betrayal — the true story of what happened when acclaimed author Truman Capote exposed the secrets of his “swans,” a group of New York City socialites with whom he’d become close. But let’s be honest: It’s also about the clothing. The clean-cut elegance of Babe Paley. The sporty-chic style of Slim Keith. C.Z. Guest’s impeccable tweeds and turtlenecks.

I love what costume designer Leah Katznelson, costume designer of Feud: Capote Vs. The Swans, has to say about designing costumes for a period piece: “We’re working with actors who are embodying these characters, so our job is to support that transformation…Our goal was not to fully replicate head to toe what somebody would have worn. It was more to help paint a feeling.” When you’re costuming a production (at least a realistic one) you have to balance a narrative imperative with accuracy. Sure, dressing the women of Feud means extensive research into New York high society in the 1960s, but it also means extensive research into character and what motivated these women at their core. By “supporting their transformation” as Katznelson puts it, she helps add to storytelling by incorporating bits of personality into the costumes instead of just replicating clothes from the 60s. It also helps the actors have an easier time inhabiting their roles.
