CHOSUNBIZ: Union formation efforts are intensifying in New York's Off-Broadway, the theater district outside of Broadway. I found this article fascinating because I think it accurately gives a picture of both sides, both the unions and the theatres. The need for benefits and good wages is undoubtable, and standing together through unions is historically the best way for workers to achieve that. At the same time, as always, the theatres must maintain a delicate balance in order to stay afloat. I would love to know more about the process behind unionization in theatres. There were some parts of the article that discussed them as if they are formed around a specific theatre, but the language in other parts seemed to suggest they were formed in attachment to a specific production. However, I have some knowledge of IATSE locals being regional. I wonder which of these descriptions is most accurate, or if it is really most accurate to say a combination of the three or if it mostly happens on a case by case basis.
