Costumes have a really powerful effect on emotion towards a character. Even subconsciously, the colors a character is wearing have a big impact on the audience. I think it's pretty common knowledge that superheroes generally wear primary colors while villains wear secondary colors. And that invokes a certain reaction form those watching.
With a character as well known as Superman, and superheroes in general, their costume is really important to the character. It's something that everyone is going to notice and focus on. I love what they said here about Superman needing to be a character that kids aren't scared of. I think that applies both to the characters in the movie, as well as kids watching it. The bright, child friendly colors make his whole look more appealing and less intimidating to a child. From what the director said, this look will set the tone for the whole movie.
