How Alaska Thunderf*ck Does Her Makeup For Drag: The Musical
Playbill: “That’s so weird,” Alaska Thunderfuck squeals when I share with her that she was my introduction to drag performance when her season of RuPaul’s Drag Race aired over a decade ago. “I do feel like drag is a calling,” she says, returning to her fried vocal timbre. “I feel called to do it. On some level, it makes sense. That is great.”

Especially in current America, where self-expression and queer spaces are under attack by the government every day, I think that shows like this that celebrate the joys of drag and the message of loving one another are even more important. Theater can teach many lessons and teach people about social issues in an accessible, and even sometimes comedic way. This has been particularly relevant recently, with the resurgence of interest in Cabaret on the internet as people use the message and songs to educate others about the current state of the world. This show could be used in a similar way. And, of course, Alaska’s makeup is beautiful and I enjoyed seeing her craft her stage persona through makeup and clothing in the video.
