2025 Art Directors Guild Awards nominations include Wicked, Dune

GoldDerby: The Art Directors Guild Awards has announced the nominations for its 29th annual kudos, and all five of this year’s predicted production design Oscar nominees received bids from the guild on Thursday: The Brutalist and Gladiator II in the period race, Dune: Part Two and Wicked in the fantasy category, and Conclave in the contemporary contest.

The production design in Wicked, in my opinion, was breathtaking. They planted a whole filed of tulips for the opening shot of that movie, which on one hand is kind of insane, but also shows a level of attention to detail that I think often gets overlooked in a world of CGI and after effects. I was also excited to see that Saturday Night was on this list because the production design in that movie was incredible! The attention to detail that managed to recreate such an iconic place in such a way that it was indistinguishable from the actual building was really impressive. There were so many subtle details that really transport that movie into a different time period, and I think it's a shame that sets that are more grounded in reality are often seen as less impressive than their fantasy counterparts, but I would argue that recreating reality can be much more difficult than constructing a fantasy setting because of the preconceived notions that come with a more grounded setting.

I find award season very interesting. The thing that is most surprising to me this year, is how all the talk recently and really throughout the whole year has been about Wicked. It's just been Wicked, Wicked, Wicked. And before that it was all about Dune II and Challengers. They have just been everywhere, and this is evident in this article which specifically highlights Wicked in the title. However, seen thus far, Wicked hasn’t been sweeping all the categories like everyone expected it too. This was most surprising in the recent Golden Globes where Wicked lost Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy and Best Supporting Actress – Motion Picture to Emilia Pérez. This was a film I hadn't heard of before, nor did it seem like most people online had either. And the majority of reviews I have seen since were calling it out for being highly transphobic and just a bad movie in general. On the side of this article, I saw the predictions column the site had for Best Picture, and, again, Wicked and Dune II (which were the titles of this article and probably the most popular pieces) were nowhere near the top. I just find this weird and confusing, but I guess we should trust the “experts” right?
