You're Probably Eligible to File Your Taxes for Free
lifehacker.com: As if paying your taxes wasn’t painful enough, paying to file your taxes adds insult to injury. How much you pay for tax preparation depends on several factors, like how complex your taxes are and what type of service you use.
Taxes are a thing that troubles my generation. It is something that looms over us as a responsibility but we’re never actually taught it in school. My parents make me do my own taxes but I have plenty of friends and even my therapist who have their parents doing their taxes every year. Something that I find myself jealous of but hopefully eventually it will serve me. I think part of the horror is what happens when taxes go wrong. I feel like it’s so easy to miss something or put something in wrong. I find myself double-checking nothing more than my tax return. Paying money to file taxes is also just a bummer. This year because of the form of work I did I am not getting a refund but I actually have to give the government money back. Eventually, maybe I will pay someone to do my taxes but for now, this article will serve as my money-saving initiative.
It is simply way too hard to file taxes. Why does it have to be so hard? It is great that there are a few ways that you can file your taxes for free through the IRS, but this is the first time that I have even heard of these free programs. It also is really interesting that the cheapest easiest options to file taxes are forty dollars or one hundred dollars. Does the IRS not already know how much you owe? It would seem like they should be able to just do the math for everyone and tell them how much they owe. If they can tell when someone is wrong or committing fraud then they should be able to just do it for everyone. This would make it free for everyone and no one would have to be confused to no end this time of year. But that would never actually happen.
