NFTRW Weekly Top Five

Here are the top five comment generating posts of the past week:

Is high school theater the next battleground in the culture war?

NPR: Is high school theater the next battleground in the culture war? In Florida, Indiana, Kansas and Pennsylvania plays and musicals have been challenged or canceled recently. Parents or school officials have complained that the content isn't family friendly. One such case is a production of The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee at Cardinal High School in Middlefield, Ohio. But there, the story took a different turn.

No Oscar nominations again for female directors: how the industry can better support diverse filmmakers

theconversation.com: There’s an ongoing joke in our household. When I win at cards it’s luck. When my husband wins it’s skill. I often wonder if this is also how the industry perceives female film directors. And I always feel that when a male director makes a great film, he’s a great director – but when a female director does, it’s down to luck or a “team effort”.

ArtsProfessional: I went to a local comprehensive in a heavily industrialised coal mining town. I am forever grateful that an accident of fate forged my career: I was given free music lessons. The grim realities of mining and its economic uncertainties shaped the whole community. That large cohorts of children in 1970s Leicestershire would transcend those circumstances through free music education - some going on to become eminent in the profession - left a lasting mark on me.

Queendom Comes to Pittsburgh: 'SIX' Ex-Wives Tell Their Her-Story

onstagepittsburgh.com: Welcome to the Queendom of SIX, where history is her-story, Henry VIII is merely mentioned, and the women he married get their turn in the spotlight. That’s pretty much how the concert musical that has taken the UK and USA by storm begins, with the members of Henry’s ex-wives club telling audiences to forget what they think they know and prepare for a “histo-remix.”

Legal expert: Tennessee’s law limiting drag performances likely violates the First Amendment

Salon.com: On March 2, 2023, Tennessee became the first state to enact a law restricting drag performances. This law is part of a larger push by Republican lawmakers in numerous states to restrict or eliminate events like drag shows and drag story hours.
