Meet the Black Women Reshaping American Theater

www.shondaland.com: As some of the first and few Black women at the helm of theater institutions across the country, Nataki Garrett, Patricia McGregor, Dominique Morisseau, and Hana Sharif are making history. They are also facing massive obstacles like “white flight” of donors, and in one case, a death threat.

Seeing these articles always make me so happy as a black woman in the theater industry. I love witnessing black women within this industry be uplifted especially because there are so few of us specifically those of us who work backstage. These women especially, Patricia McGregor, Nataki Garret, Dominique Morriseau and Hana Sharif. I found the individualistic ways that they all got into theater to be very meaningful and showcase how even though they all possess a similar identity of being a black woman the way in which they approach these experiences and write about them are all unique. This is also showcasing the way that they answer the questions outlined within the article and their approach to reimagining the black experience within theater. Especially the way they address how they wish their work to be perceived. Though the answers were all varied in their own way what I took from it as a black woman in theater is that they just want to be seen and showcase the beauty of the black experience beyond our trauma.
