“Is God Is” at barebones productions

The Pittsburgh Tatler: What do you get when you cross a modern-day instance of brutal domestic violence with the mythic revenge plots of ancient Greek tragedy and then add in a dash of Pulp Fiction-esque violence?

From the article Is God Is sounds like a wild ride of a play that has a tragedy plot twist from burn and foster care victims to two girls on a man hunt for blood. I like the way the article described the way they chose to scenically scale way back on depiction and let a lot of it lie in the imaginations of the audience members after being prompted by text headers on the stage and narrated descriptions of what is happening. The two curtains is an interesting choice for a minimalistic stage because the article describes them looking like they’re in a puppet show, but I think two curtains leave a lot of room for interpretation such as hospital curtains for the mother scene, walls of rooms that don’t actually exist, a way to silhouette complicated sequences of actions etc. Aside from budget and ability parameters I think taking a minimalistic show especially with more unconventional plots such as Is God Is provides more by providing physically less.
