Hollywood sets have a safety problem
The Washington Post: Back in October 2021, two major events happened in Hollywood. First, 60,000 union members overwhelmingly voted to go on strike because of rough working conditions on television and movie sets. The strike was narrowly averted, but it left union members wanting more. Later that month, actor Alec Baldwin allegedly shot and killed a crew member on the set of his movie “Rust.” Many blamed poor set conditions, with crew members walking off-set the day of the shooting.

Something emphasized both during and prior to my Carnegie Mellon education is the fact that theater can never be made safe, only safer. Part of being in any part of the entertainment industry is understanding, accepting and living in a certain amount of risk, that being said the long days, and lack of care for actors and crews safety in the film and theater industry has become abundantly clear. The incident on the set of rest that ended up in the completely preventable death of a member of the crew was an inevitable accident with the direction film industries are headed. The long and grueling days take a toll on the cast and crew psyche and physical health. This fact alone makes so many sets and situations unsafe due to negligence. If nothing is done to make sets and working conditions safer accidents such as what happen on the set of Rust will inevitably happen again.
