When I saw the renderings of the scenic design for this show I was immediately blown away. I had never even thought that a traditional proscenium theater, especially one on Broadway, could be so radically transformed like it will be for this show. These designs take a traditional proscenium and turn it on its head. The way that David Korins has so successfully turned this theater into a nightclub is incredible. The rendering looks very immersive and I can’t imagine that this show will look the same from any two seats. One of the biggest restrictions of a proscenium theater, and the reason so many shows end up working best in black box type settings, is that it is very hard to create a scenic design that is not traditional in its setup with the audience facing the stage. This design has taken that restriction and ignored it entirely. I really hope to be able to see this show from any of the many angles it offers.
Here Lies Love is another show I am so excited to see. I feel like theater and art is ever changing. So when a production designer does something that can bring a new light theater I feel like that’s really impressive. The use of making this theater into a disco dance club and having a Four viewing seating option I think you’re so smart. The article talked about how the scenic designer really wants to redefine what it means to be in an immersive theater event. I feel like that’s what makes theater what it is and brings creativity to the stage. Also, the reason I want to see the show is because Alex Timbers is the Director and he talked about in the article that live theater doesn’t exist without an audience “ he is a Director that I think has brought theater back to life whether you talk about Moulin Rouge or this show it brings a new life to theater.
