2023 Tony Award Eligibilities Begin to Take Shape

The BroadwayBlog: Tony season approaches, and that means eligibilities are now being discussed. This year, there are some new rules. “For the 2022-2023 season only, a voter will have the ability to vote in each category where the voter has not viewed up to one (1) performance of each production, and up to one (1) creative element which has been nominated for an Award, and up to one (1) performance by each performer who has been nominated for an Award. Write-in votes shall not be permitted,” the new rule reads.

For the 2022-2023 season of Tony Awards I am appalled that the new rule to vote is that the viewer does not have to have had seen the performance of each production, or even seen the creative elements or performance elements which are nominated. I find this new rule very absurd because in shows nominated like Into the Woods voters don’t have to go see it now, and could just vote for it because they like it. I believe that award ceremonies are very biased based and not really there to highlight the creative and hardworking creatives that created this entire production. By not requiring voters to view the productions, they are automatically making the award ceremony even more discriminatory and one-sided. I had hoped that there would be a change in these award ceremonies so that they were more inclusive and representative of the work being put into these productions, but it seems that they are just focused on earning more money from the publicity that this award ceremony creates.
