The Pittsburgh Symphony, along with the Mendelssohn Choir of Pittsburgh, perform the score to 'Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban'
onstagepittsburgh.com: As conductor Moon Doh takes the stage with a Harry Potter wand in hand, you get the feeling that something, dare I say…magical is about to occur. Doh introduces the evening’s performance as a “journey from film to life” as the Pittsburgh Symphony and the Mendelssohn Choir of Pittsburgh are set to perform the score to Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban.
I have always wanted to attend a performance of a symphony doing a movie’s soundtrack live. There have been multiple instances in my hometown where I could have gone to see movies like Harry Potter live, and if I had known that the Pittsburgh Symphony was performing it this past weekend I would have gotten a ticket. However, now I know for the future to look out for shows like this. I find the whole topic of performing the music of a movie live while the movie plays intriguing. I know that it would make the entire experience of watching the movie much more enjoyable and immersive. Having been a Happy Potter fan for a while, I can’t imagine how magical the experience must have been to feel as if you were in the movie with harry potter. The coordination between the musicians and the production staff must have been a large effort, especially when both the symphony and the Mendelssohn Choir of Pittsburgh were also preforming with them. I can image the chills the audience must have gotten from experiencing John William’s music live.
Growing up the St.Louis symphony did a very similar thing accompanying movies playing the live score. I always wanted to go but things never lined up growing up. I love the idea of a semi immersive theatrical experience with some live performers and some things that are filmed. Back in high school due to COVID I actually did a very similar thing with Be More Chill having live elements incorporated into a recording. With copyright lifted on so many iconic franchises and more copyright changes to come I am excited to see what new live film soundtracks get developed. Though the Prisoner of Azkaban is a comfort movie for me I don’t personally feel comfortable spending money on harry potter related things so I will not be seeing this or any future Harry Potter Movies presented like this. I would be interested in seeing what technical development goes into an experience like this.
