Oregon Shakes Restructures, Scales Back With Eye to Future

AMERICAN THEATRE: There’s no getting around it, Oregon Shakespeare Festival (OSF) had a rough 2022. Crucial summer performances were canceled due to COVID, the now regular wildfire season took its toll, overall attendance was down, and, to make things egregiously worse, artistic director Nataki Garrett received death threats and had to travel with a security detail.

While I definitely understand why they are taking a step back at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival after such an absolutely horrendous season last year in between COVID, the wildfires that ravaged the west coast, and the troubling threats directed at their Artistic Director; I still wish terribly that they were to hire interns for this summer. I adore outdoor theatre, I find it to be one of the most fun and most challenging aspects of theatre that I have ever had the privilege of being a part of and the Oregon Shakespeare Festival is such a large part of that in the American Theatre circuit which I would love to at least apply to if not actually get the opportunity to work with and for them. I just hope that their restructuring effort is successful and they are able to provide opportunities to up and coming theatre professionals in time for next summer.
