Interlochen’s New Breathtaking Dance Center Is Ready for Class

Dance Magazine: After months of practicing in a cramped space at home, young dancers have dreamed of training in a spacious, airy studio. And when the facilities are as resplendent as the brand-new dance center at Michigan's Interlochen Center for the Arts, everyday technique class is to be savored.

You will be shocked to hear I, myself, attended Interlochen. Yes, you read that right, just a few years back I had the privilege and opportunity of attending Interlochen Arts Camp for two consecutive years. Now, while that is definitely the reason I was intrigued by this article, I am very much glad I did. For one, it is amazing to see what the old, quite frankly, the beaten-down installation looks like now. I mean, I remember hearing dancers (of all ages) constantly complain about the floor, lighting, and heat during the few breaks they had. Not shockingly, the previous dance studio did not have air conditioning. I bet you can imagine how that played out during the summer season. Not only that but this breathtaking renovation seems to have taken advantage of the fabulous view of Interlochen’s lake. I’m not gonna lie, it makes me want to visit the space to see it for myself!

This new state of the art facility unveiled for Interlochen described in the article is really impressive. I’ve only heard of Interlochen vaguely prior to reading this article, so it was actually really informative to be walked through not only the specifics of this new building, but also the mission and academic facets of this company. I do think that this balance of education and dance is a really productive and fair system to the students. All the new technology and architectural features integrated in the space were also very interesting to read about. I’ve always thought that the the environment one is in when practicing their craft and developing their passion is very important; it is definitely a major factor in influencing how this skill and interest could cultivate and advance further in one’s life, so hopefully this new dance center for Interlochen does so for its dancers in a positive way.

I went to Interlochen art camp for three weeks the summer after freshman year of high school for drawing. It was definitely an intensive experience but I did get a lot from it and I did have a good time there with the friends I made. They do a pretty good job with the classes / life balance there, except for on weekends where there was virtually nothing happening... I only vaguely remember the old dance center that was there back in 2015, but I do remember how beaten down and kind of old it was. There wasn’t a whole lot of natural light, and being inside it felt a lot more like being in one of our cabin than in the modern visual arts building. I think the upgrades to this place will really be good for the students, and the view of the lake is so nice now! It’s very unlikely that I’ll ever go back there and see it, but it would definitely be cool to look around again.
