‘He understood our national psyche’: Terence Rattigan deserves a proper memorial

Theatre | The Guardian : What is the best tribute to a dead playwright? For their work to be regularly revived. On that score, admirers of Terence Rattigan have few grounds for complaint: his wartime comedy While the Sun Shines packed out the Orange Tree in 2019 and returns this month for the Christmas season.

I had never heard about Terence Rattigan, but now that I have read this article about him, I am so very interested to read his works, especially The Deep Blue Sea. I really like the viewpoint of the article's writer in that Rattigan understood the nation's psyche. I think that impactful writers have the potential to take from the society and paint it for the society, which only helps the society in my opinion. In this case, Rattigan and his works (most of them at least) resonated with the society because in a way, the shown emotions were a part of the atmosphere of the time. Sure there would be times when he would have missed the mark, but coming up with stories that give the readers an outlet to see parts of their life or the way they feel in a piece of art only adds to the connection they would feel with the story, which I think was definitely the case with Rattigan's stories.
