Adrian: The Costume Designer Who Made Hollywood High Fashion

www.lofficielusa.com: We often look to television and Hollywood stars to define the style of the times. Famed American costume designer Adrian Adolph Greenburg, known as Gilbert Adrian or most often simply Adrian, didn't just design the costumes for hundreds of the most legendary films and actresses—he transformed the world of film and fashion both on and off screen.

It is always very interesting to realize that what we perceive to be “normal” now was actually wasn’t at the past, and there was always the person who renovated that. In this case it was Adrian. I was surprised how he not only designed the luxurious Hollywood costumes but also the ones in The Wizard of Oz, which really demonstrated his wide spectrum of design (and I wish the article had more contents about it too). Throughout the article, I liked how Adrian came to me as a designer that focused not only on the appearances or efficiency of costumes, but also on the impacts that the costumes could bring upon the society. I think it is commendable that Adrian, in the time period when the media was not yet developed as actively as nowadays, intended to think out of the box (or the screen frame) to make a culture out of his costumes.

This article was very fascinating. I’m so glad that this was published so more people ca learn about Adrian. He is one of the most essential hollywood costume designers. When you think of the glamour of old films, that comes from his costumes. Although the Wizard of Oz is probably his most recognizable work, his work on The Women was legendary. The film has a whole sequence of a fashion show which displays all his beautiful work. Jeremy Scott just released a collection at Moschino entitled Red Jungle that references this fashion show and emulates the glamorous styles of Adrian. It is interesting to see how his influence carries to today. I also think it is incredible that he was able to gain fame through costume design and then translate this into a career into the fashion industry. It goes to show that his creativity could not just be limited to one field!- Evan Riley

I love learning about the history of the film industry, so this article spoke to me. It is fascinating to me that in decades as early as the 20’s and 30’s, designers were already making a name for themselves despite film being such a brand new medium. I also admire the pioneering figures like Adrian accomplish, and how it is reflected in more modern works. Adrian’s accomplishments speak for themselves, especially with his costuming of the Wizard of Oz. These costumes are so universally recognizable decades later and are a testament to his artistry. I also admire the elegant style of most of his gowns, and the first collection of images in the article especially speaks to me. It is also interesting how carefully Adrian played with silhouette, and there is a clearly defined style across all of his pieces. Overall, I found this article fascinating, and I appreciate how early film pioneers like Adrian are still talked about to this day.
