Why ‘Malcolm & Marie’ Marks A Turning Point For Film Costume Design

British Vogue: How to dress a man for the biggest night of his life when Covid-19 restrictions mean you can’t reach him? Such was the conundrum celebrity stylist Samantha McMillen faced when she was enlisted to outfit John David Washington – Denzel Washington’s son – for his role in the new Netflix drama, Malcolm & Marie.

It's so interesting to see how processes are changed in COVID times. Normally, I’m sure a lot of designers, directors and actors would see these restrictions as a detriment. But it sounds like the crew of Malcolm & Marie found the silver lining. I haven't seen the film yet, but from what I understand it's a relatively “small” story. It takes place over one night with only two characters and one location. I’m sure normally, the crew would be massive and the undertaking overall would be enormous. But it sounds like the need to dial back the crew actually helped make the film more authentic. There were fewer hands on each costume and McMillen was forced to use her gut to make vital decisions. It sounds like the outcome of this unique and streamlined process was a beautiful, collaborative, well thought out array of costumes. It's so exciting artists being forced to explore and have their limits pushed, and still manage to create something astounding!
