It’s incredibly hopeful to read that progress is truly being made in terms of destroying white supremacy in the American theatre. As a Black and Mexican woman who looks to work in the American theatre industry when I finish school, I have gone through my academic journey with several concerns about the future and how many extra steps I will need to take in comparison to my white counterparts. I find it brave and inspiring the way We See You White American Theatre was able to individually call out several theatre institutions and essentially force them into giving some sort of response. It’s amazing that these institutions are being held accountable for their actions. There is no change without accountability and the more I read about the progress being made by WSYWAT, the more hopeful I am for the future. Seeing these institutions laying out plans and making moves to further anti-racist theatre makes graduating and going into the real world a little less scary.
