Thomas Schumacher Q & A. Broadway will have to rebuild again
New York Theater: “Out of all this madness, and out of all this pain, will grow some opportunity for new voices, new creators.”
So says Thomas Schumacher, president of Disney Theatrical Productions and current chair of The Broadway League, who discussed Broadway’s future and its past, what it will take to reopen, issues of diversity, the Tony Awards, the new streaming, and the need for kindness, in conversation at the Theatermakers Summit on Saturday with Broadway publicist Rick Miramontez

I’ve heard so many different numbers thrown around regarding when Broadway will be reopening. However, I think the more important question to be asking and to be solving in this current moment is how is Broadway going to return. I hate the fact that the president of Disney Theatrical Productions is also a current chair of The Broadway League. As if the amount of people who work in theater was not already a small enough number. What I liked about this interview is that this guy was very knowledgeable. The fact that the West End is much more in touch with government officials about how and when they can reopen just shows how much of an upward battle the reopening of Broadway may be in comparison. I think that Cuomo is very intelligent and he knows how important art and film is to contributing to the New York City economy, but he also is a huge advocate for safety above all else.
