Wendy Wasserstein Took Her to Her First Show. Now She's Paying It Forward
Theatre Development Fund – TDF: Growing up in the Bronx in the '90s, Erica Vargas-Catucci saw a Playbill long before she ever saw a play. "At the time, I used to help my mother clean houses in Manhattan," she says. "At one, the person always had Playbills on the table in their living room. Sometimes I would peruse them, wishing I had the opportunity to go to the theatre. When that opportunity presented itself through TDF I thought, this is my chance! This is how I will get to see what I've been so curious about."

I did not know that this type of program exists for New York high schoolers. It sounds not only like a great program to participate in and facilitate, but also a great experience for those who cannot afford to go to Broadway shows or those who have never been. I kinda wish this type of a program was available to all students in the US, not just those in New York, but I understand the idea of the initial creation of this program, and the fact that it would probably be too competitive to do. I also loved that one of the first people to go on the trip with Wendy Wasserstein is going back 20 years later as a teacher. It is always a really encouraging sign to see a member of any program return and help drive the program further. I also thought it was cool that the first trip went to Long Wharf Theater as well to see a play that Wasserstein wrote herself. I hope that this program continues to exist for 20 more years and inspires many more students.
