LED video canvas for One Third Nightclub
www.livedesignonline.com: Daan Oomen, Creative Director of Live Legends live experience designers based out of Amsterdam, was tasked to create a turnkey show experience for nightclub ‘One Third’, which was built in an old factory – a former foundry turned train station, based in China. To power the dynamic and immense scale LED video canvas, Oomen chose a 4x4pro disguise pro range media server. The pixel maps of the club are complicated, or as Oomen puts it, ‘insane’ and the only choice was to power them using disguise.

This impressive media display for the One Third nightclub is unlike anything I have ever seen before. Though, in reading the article, it almost seems to be an advertisement for disguise’s media servers. The majority of the article is just talking about disguise, over and over. However, this recognition in the article is well deserved. The pictures of the media setup in the new One Third nightclub exhibit the utter insanity that this new project is. This isn’t just any simple LED wall—there are panels handing from the ceiling, panels ON the ceiling, on the walls, curved surfaces, straight surfaces, moving objects—to coordinate not only the displays, but the lights, the music, the special effects, the motion of the hanging screens would take immense power. Seeing as the disguise media servers seem to handle this with no issues, they deserve the recognition. disguise is industry standard for a reason—and this is a perfect example of that. One other note from the article that I found interesting is the term video-jockey, or VJ. Everyone has heard of disc-jockeys, or DJ’s, but as video and media become more prevalent in the world, I suppose it’s fitting that they get their own name.
I love that video and media design is forcing itself into many aspects of the entertainment industry. When I was in middle and high school, I had the opportunity to work on projections for multiple shows, which at the time seemed so new and interesting, and it still is today. I am so amazed with how much technology is improving and how integrated and accepted this newer medium is making itself. In terms of this particular article, I really appreciate how they mention the software used in this specific case because yes it is cool and all to say oh wow look at the pretty projections that this one night club in China did, but it is a totally different aspect of sharing information and knowledge to share the tools so that others can learn and grow alongside this leading club. This article reminds me that in my 4 year span here at CMU, that I need to learn how to use the LED wall in the Wells because using something like that out in the real world would be super cool.
This looks so cool! All the media and lighting looks like so much fun to experiment in this room. What really strikes me as interesting is how they say the "video [media], lighting, special effects, motion and lasers are all in sync.” It can be really wonderful when every part of the design can run at the same time flawlessly, it just contributes to the experience and takes away small mistakes that could be accidentally made when they are called by a SM for example. It is also really cool to see how massive the media takes over in this place. Just from the photos, mapping everything out can seem so complicated, but when is it all organized into one system maybe it ends up being pretty simple. I am very curious how this system is organized communicating all the lights, media, special effects and more. I am also curious if there is just a DJ and a person incorporating everything else, or if there is a like VDJ as well as someone operating the lighting and then somehow they precue so their effects can happen at the same time? I am not sure of any of this but either way it seems fun and exiting to think about different ways to make it operate.
This, to me, seems really insane to think about. I would not really imagine a night club to have this large of a rig of brand new technology, but it looks really cool to have. I am always amazed when I see the next big thing for LED screens on Live Design’s website because it seems like everyday there is something new to see. I somehow got on their email list, so everyday I get a selection of around 5 articles in the morning and it seems like at least one of the 5 have to do with media or LED technology. It is really crazy to see the speed at which the media industry is growing. There is always something new and exciting and always something that seems like it has not been done before. I also like how this company can now use this whole article and project to market their products. They successfully were able to do this one, and I am sure that this project will make them grow even more in the future.
This set looks absolutely ridiculous. I could never image being in a position where I got to work with such and intreating setup of lights, sound, media, rigging, special effects and more. Looking at this, that first question I had for myself was, "Who did this?" When I see something like that I immediately am interesting in who designed the setup and who built it. While, selfishly, one reason I ask myself this is that I want to be able to work with these people and companies one day, it is also so I can look at what else the company has accomplished. One thing I found amazing about this project, is that they used disguise to accomplish the media aspects of it. The most amazing thing to me about that, is it is a program we haved used here at the CMU SoD before. It is alwys amazing to see the same stuff we work with in the real world.
