Interview With Pulitzer Prize Winning Playwright TONY KUSHNER

Showbiz Chicago: Known for his groundbreaking works including the Pulitzer Prize-winning Angels in America and the Olivier-awarded Caroline, Or Change, Tony Kushner has become one of the most prolific playwrights of our generation. I sat down with Mr. Kushner who was in Chicago to receive the Chicago Tribune Literary Prize as part of the Chicago Humanities Festival.

I think reading interviews with playwrights is so interesting because I don’t know many playwrights, I have never been a playwright, and I have no intentions of ever being one. So reading about the processes of different playwrights is something that I find very interesting. I especially find it so interesting to read an interview with a playwright of a show that I have studied so deeply in class. Since the music in Caroline, Or Change is so crucial in telling the story, I would have thought that Kushner and Tesori would have worked on it from the very beginning together, so it was interesting to learn that Kushner wrote the whole thing before he started working with Tesori, but I am not surprised at all how collaborative the process was after she joined on because the music and the lyrics are so integrated throughout the entire show and flow flawlessly. A lot of playwrights have different views of their own work, but often I see playwrights talk about how their most famous or most successful work is their lead favorite, and that is not the case with Kushner. I appreciate that he recognizes what is good in his work the same way that the audiences do. I think the play feels more authentic when the playwright likes it in the same way the audiences do.
