Highlights of the 2019 International Builders' Show

Home Fixated: Roving reporter Michael Springer here with coverage of the 2019 International Builders’ Show (IBS), held in snowy Las Vegas, Nevada. The weather was unusual, but it was still warmer than where many of us were visiting from so no biggie. The 2019 IBS marks the 75th anniversary of this trade show, and this year the show featured more than 1,500 exhibitors sprawled out over 600,000 square feet. Now combined with the Kitchen and Bath Industry Show (KBIS), every hall of the Las Vegas Convention Center was filled, and the attendee count broke the 100,000 people mark. I wandered as much of the acreage as I could (including the outdoor exhibits), and I encountered cool tools and gear, building materials and fasteners, and everything else that goes into a house.

This year's International Builders' Show seems to have showcased a lot of new and interesting stuff this year. When it comes to tools, I am really interested to see how Festool's new shop vac hose works. Slimming only four centimeters along the entire length of the hose, I feel like there is no way it really makes that big of a difference. Also in the realm of tools, I found it weird that there was only one dust collection device showcased in the article. With OSHA's new dust collection standards, almost every tool type expo has had tons of new dust collection systems. From backpack vacuums to new drills with built in collection, we have seen almost everything. But with this show, all we see is the new circular saw dust collection attachment. Other than actual tools, I found it interesting to learn about JS Products and their relationship with Dewalt. I had never thought about things like Dewalt sunglasses and accessories not being made by Dewalt.

This event is something I wished I had learned about before I had done my material/tool project of the future project. There are a lot of different things in this list that have a great potential to make their way quickly into our everyday work flow. The most interesting thing that I saw in this article was Dewalt’s AR app and not necessarily for the technology on display but for the potential. Being able to take preprogrammed/design elements and rendering them through a lens so that one can see them in a space is so cool to me. I can just imagine a load-in/design meeting where a design team is able to just walk into a space and take their drawings to life on stage and walk through each component of the set. The ability to interact and conceive the design in the physical space and quickly adapt said design on the fly is something I see soon coming to theaters.

Whenever there is a builder’s expo roundup, I am never surprised when I see Festool at the top of the list. While Festool does make a very good line of tools, personally, I just can not stand all of the plastic that surrounds the tool. Every time I go to open a Festool container, I am afraid I am going to break it because of the flimsy plastic that they choose to hold all of their accessories. I had never heard of the International Builders’ Show, I guess I need to go to Vegas more often, but it does seem like an expo that I would enjoy. This article did a really good job at covering the big names at the convention and showed a variety of products that were being shown from power tools to different adhesives to roofing shingles. Also, the decision to put pictures with each of the sections of the article gave the entire page a sort of “Pro Tool” review vibe.
