Hamilton Education Program on Broadway

The Theatre Times: Broadway’s Richard Rodgers Theatre is not only home to musical theatre sensation Hamilton but also host to the Hamilton Education Program (HEP). HEP is an educational initiative partnership between the show, the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History, the Rockefeller Foundation, and the New York City Department of Education. Their most recent event held on Wednesday, March 20, saw 1,300 New York City high school students and teachers participate in a daylong program, culminating in a matinee performance of Hamilton.

Hamilton was already in full swing before I actually had to take high school U.S. history and the first 2 months were so easy because of it. We watched Hamilton clips in class and the class next door just watched a bootleg of the full thing. Although it's not the most historically accurate story what hamilton does is it gives a "personal" account to the time period and helps students relate and visualise the time. Additionally through music rote memorisation is less demanding. I’m glad to hear the cast and production as a whole is using the opportunity to educate the community while letting them interact with art. One part of the article that was less exciting was the appearance on Miranda on stage. To me this seemed more like a publicity stunt than an educational event and although it may have been cool, it took away from the true message of the article which was more focused on the intersection in arts and history. I wonder if this model can be used on a smaller scale such as historically based pieces regionally or even on other broadway shows.
