How I Made My First Music Video Set for Whitesnake

Han Painted Designs: Building my own set from scratch was one of the most daunting project I’ve ever completed. Building it for my first celebrity client — even more daunting. I loved the process, I hated the process, but overall it was a total success. So here’s how I did, what it meant to me, and all those things.

What an undertaking! She basically built an entire set by herself, which is freaking awesome. I loved this article because the author did not sugar coat her process. She broke down each section of the build process in this article. She was clear and she writes passionately. It’s also a bit peculiar to me that shes calls a “set” just a singular wall. Although the wall that she builds and designs does change the environment of the room, I did not realize that a set could be a wall. However, I don’t think that the way she made these walls was the most efficient, or the most safe. Her use of a heat gun with foam was definitely a choice. I think she would have purchased the material that we used for bright room and painted it. However, she does not disclose her budget, so I’m not so sure. Anyway… really cool article.

I think this was really cool to read and also a little relatable. Making something on a tight budget that still looks good is hard and reading and seeing her process was kind of inspiring. Honestly it reminds me of imaginarium and that stresses me out a little but they are similar. A smallish space, a tight budget, and a lot to do. I like her diy methods of duct taping everything together first. As someone who is terrible at carpentry I totally understand the struggle of building something. I do hope that I will get better though because it is a super useful skill to have. Anyway I really like her set dressing and painting stuff the most. Her skill set is really more toward the prop end of things and you can tell by looking at this set. The neon sign is kind of amazing because I would not have known how to do that.

This is so cool! Designed and build the set?! That’s amazing! As every DP can relate on the notion of having to create something on a tight budget, the result is truly amazing. The article really details her process which I appreciate so the reader can truly get a feel of what her entire process was like and how her end result ended up being so damn cool. From another DP perspective, like Ella said, she made interesting choices as to how to build this set. Even though it ended up being fine, I think there was an easier way to do it. I grew up with my mom playing her 80s hair bands all the time, Whitesnake being one, so I really enjoyed reading this cool article. I would love to work in the music business and seeing people working for artists that I have been listening to since I was in a car seat is so cool.
