The grant that I am most interested in from this article is the second. The concept of single point cable spin has proven to cause several problems for various flying applications in the industry. There are several industry standards or workarounds that can be used to solve the problem, but none of them are an exact single point solution.
The immediate solution that I drift towards is a bearing assembly that allows the cable to relax while not spinning the scenic pieces. I do have to admit that this proposed solution is very much easier said than done. I would anticipate the entire bearing assembly would spin instead of compensating for the rotation. I would be interested to see what the team in Oregon is coming up with and what their proposed solutions are. Overall, I think this grant money is necessary to advance the industry, and I look forward to hearing what other proposals come from this.
