Shining a New Light on The House of Dancing Water Show
Stage Directions: The world’s largest and most spectacular water-based show – The House of Dancing Water directed by Franco Dragone and staged in the purpose-built House of Dancing Water Theatre in Macau – has just added 63 new Robe moving lights to the theatre’s rig. The integrity, drama, and dynamics of Luc Lafortune’s original lighting design are all preserved as the concept works beautifully and timelessly to support the show narrative.

Traditionally, water and electricity mix very well, but in a very dangerous way. I have never heard of this company let alone have never had the opportunity to see a production at The House of Dancing Water, I can only imagine the difficulties that would arise from lighting a show like this. While there are waterproof versions of lighting fixtures, the selection is limited, especially with a production of this caliber. I have never done a show with water effects, but talking with people who have had that experience, there seem to be a whole new level of difficulties than a standard theatrical production. One of the first difficulties that comes to mind, other than lighting, is sound. Anyone who has seen a waterfall in person knows how loud water is when it falls, and to incorporate powerful pumps to do the effects that House of Dancing Water achieves must be engineered to a T.
