David Korins Set Design for 2019 Oscars
www.livedesignonline.com: “I was in tech for Beetlejuice, on my dinner break when I got a phone call from Glenn Weiss, who I know from the Tony Awards,” recalls creative director and designer David Korins, who designed the 91st Academy Awards, broadcast live on ABC on Sunday, February 24, 2019. “I swallowed the piece of sushi I was eating, and said ‘yes.’ There are only five or six jobs that are such great opportunities, and you really want to do them,” notes the designer.

It is really interesting to see the set design for The Oscars because this is not a show I think of as needing scenic design. For me, its always just kinda been a show and that's fine. But I realize that there are many different types of shows that I have discounted as needing designers. I always think of stand - up comedy as something that doesn't really anything but a stage and a mic but that is just false because there are so many components of stand up that are needed. The Oscars is very much the same for me. I need to realize there are a lot more opportunities for designers than I think. Looking at this article it is really cool because so much thought must have gone into this design and although it is very pretty and can look a somewhat minimalistic at times there are a lot of hidden components that really make it shine.
Wow what doesn’t Davd Korins design. I feel like his work is just everywhere at this point everyone in the world wants him to design their stage. He seems to have kept his brand rolling ever since he got the Hamilton job. The most amazing thing that I have noticed about his work that no two design are ever alike. The difference between Kanye and Dear Evan Hansen are vast and the design process are always different. The Ocsars is of a scale and size like no other show in the world and I think being offered it is something that just shows how much work he does. The amount fo broadway he still does is also still interesting to me it shows where his roots lie and while it may be a more niche market its still interesting that he chooses to go back to it. I’m just interested to see what he’ll do next.
