Audio Engineer Jeanne Wu | Forging a Sound Career Path
www.livedesignonline.com: It’s possible that the words “self-starter” are printed in Jeanne Wu’s DNA. The Masque Sound Installations Coordinator and freelance engineer has worked as a sound designer and FOH engineer for music and theatre; she’s worked in production audio; she’s been an A1 and RF tech for special events, theatrical and corporate productions, concerts, and fashion shows. And, she recently started freelancing as an A2 for Major League Baseball. It’s a pretty broad audio resume for someone who started out as a music teacher.

Jeanne Wu has had a really cool life and a really amazing career. However, I wonder if the world is changing at all when it comes to requiring experience versus education. Wu had virtually no traditional educational experience within the world of sound design before she landed her first job. She was basically an apprentice in college under a sound designer and she slowly moved her way through the sound design world as a freelancer and the more experience she go the more she got hired. I find her success somewhat ironic when you consider that we’re here thinking that an educational is going to land us more security or better job’s within our particular theatrical fields. I’m not a huge fan of the quote that this article ends on. I agree that being independent and trusting yourself is important, but isn’t our field of study about collaboration? Isn’t delegation and trusting others just as important within our business?
