ArtsATL’s top picks for the Atlanta Black Theatre Festival

ArtsATL: The website TopTenZilla recently ranked the “top theater festivals to visit around the world,” and now we’re dying to have a peek at what the Bharat Rang Mahotsav festival looks like in New Delhi, India, and to see how things run at Moscow’s annual Chekhov International Theatre Festival (we’re guessing there’s lots of vodka involved). But mostly we’re pleased as punch that we don’t have to travel much of anywhere to enjoy what we agree is a truly fantastic event: the Atlanta Black Theatre Festival, which the website placed on their list.

The existence of festivals and events such as the Atlanta Black Theatre Festival are what is going to push for more black theatre artists. With a heavily populated black community, this festival provides the opportunity for black playwrights, production teams, performers, etc. The only thing I’m hoping to see more from events such as this are plays that involve black characters that aren’t struggling. That is the popular route that is often taken when black characters are written into a script. While showing the world the everyday struggle of being black in different periods of time is something very important, it would be refreshing to see more plays that involve black characters but not just because they are black. More diverse casts are definitely coming into mainstream theatre, but the environment festivals such as this provides gives way for more complex black characters. Creating characters like this will give way for new opportunities for black actors and playwrights, giving them the respect they deserve.
