Top Places Where Filmmakers Live And Work

Theatre Nerds: Have you ever thought of moving to the other country or city, wishing to find better life opportunities or striving for new challenges and adventures? I guess that the majority of people will answer positively. The choice of a country, city or town where you are going to live can become one of the most significant life decisions. Especially if you are a filmmaker and, except inspiring you and offering a lot of professional opportunities, your place of living should be as comfortable as it only can be.

What a nice short little article. While I knew Vancouver and London were large filmmaker filled cities, I was surprised by Berlin, Dubai, and Atlanta. I often think about where I want to live when I am older, and this article was actually reassuring for me. While I know we are here to study Drama, I am very interested to cross-over into film when I graduate. I want to move to a place that will provide me with both theatrical and film opportunities. While I know that someday I will eventually live in New York City, this article showed me I have some other really cool options and that I have a shit ton of time to explore. I remember going to watch Black Panther with a friend from Atlanta and he recognized multiple buildings and places that are in Atlanta during the film. I think traveling is such an important piece of being within the entertainment industry and I appreciated this article for educating me on things I never knew.

I think this article is interesting because I think of three people like Montreal, LA, and NYC as places to move for film but I didn’t know about any of the cities listed in this article. I think it is so interesting where film cities are. Though the reasoning of why these cities are successful film cities aren’t surprising, I am surprised at what cities they are. My one issue with this article is that it says “We have also decided to create our list of top places where filmmakers live and work, so if you are planning to start your filmmaking career or change something in your life, you can easily choose any location from our list.” I think the article says this because it is on buzz feed and meant to be click bait. I don’t think anyone needs to plan a major life change to move somewhere new to be in the film industry or in any entertainment industry or that moving to a film-centric city will get you film jobs. I think this is bad mentality because people move to New York all the time but don’t get jobs in the theatre just because they move. This is very head in the clouds mentality that I hope one day will disappear. Yes, going to New York is a good choice if you are qualified in the entertainment industry or if you have a job that could lead to another but just moving to another location doesn’t mean that you will be successful in that industry.

I love seeing Atlanta be represented in this article and seeing them grow so fast all over the film seen. As a place in the world with so many global connections and different cultures and ideas I always thought of Atlanta as a desirable place for film maker. It makes sense as the ability to change location and the workability of the environment is essential to the filming process and Atlanta has so many different environments and space for things to be created and shifted. Where I live in Atlanta on my way to school I would be able to drive past 4 or 5 houses that were used in major motion pictures along with two props warehouses for marvel studios and Disney. We now have several sound stages and studios set up for filming things not just in and around Atlanta. One advantage that the article doesn't talk about but I think carries a lot of weight is the ability for Atlanta to be set up as a hub and using one of the world's busiest airports to their advantage in order to travel and shoot in other locations.

I like this article. It gives a little snippet of where the film industry can be found and with living in LA I am actually pretty familiar with this but the majority of people are not. LA is still the capitol of the film industry but a huge majority of it has gone to Vancouver as stated here. It offers a lot of great opportunities and if you have ever seen Deadpool or supernatural, then you have seen some of what Vancouver looks like, Atlanta is actually the most promising in terms of growth and especially so with the walking dead being entirely filmed in Georgia. London has been fairly big for a while but we tend not to use it as much from an American standpoint as many believe, this is generally because of the weather but is also the reason we use it. Germany is great but typically used for American purposes when it is absolutely called for, like war movies. India is also fast growing but more so for its own film opportunities rather than a general use. This is a great list and love the representation but I feel like they could have included more and given insight into where the film industry is focusing on in its current phase of films.
