Hands-On with VR OmniDirectional Treadmill!

Tested: We step onto the Infinadeck, the omnidirectional treadmill seen in the movie Ready Player One. This treadmill lets you walk freely in virtual reality, in any direction. We learn about how it works and give our impressions on the state of the technology today. Plus, a preview of the new Oculus Studios game Defector--an action spy thriller from the developers of Wilson's Heart.

When I saw that this article was about an OmniDirectional Treadmill, Ready Player One popped right into my head but this is only to find out that this was the company that supplied a real and physical OmniDirectional Treadmill for Ready Player One. This just blows my mind. I didn’t realize that we had this technology already and that it was just special effects in the movie. But instead the only special effects were any animation they did for the in-game portions of the film. This has a huge application not only for gaming but for the world. This can much better simulate running outside all on its own and when coupled with virtual reality – the possibilities are endless it seems. The only issue I see is that of virtual reality. People can only use it for so long before it makes them sick and that is just the nature of how virtual reality is being received by its users as of today. If they can figure out another way to create the same thing then I am sure this industry will skyrocket. But till then it will remain as a growing industry but still in the background of attention compared to other industries. I’m excited to see where this goes and how they continually improve virtual reality technology and any technology that can be coupled with it as intended.

This is another version of the Omni directional trend mill, I have seen a few n the past always attached to the idea of VR. The are pretty damn cool when you view what all it allows you to do with VR. This video just reminds me of how far we have come in the world of entertainment in this regard the world of video games. I remember as a kid being stunned by the game Mario 64 and feeling that it was so cool to be able to explode this 3D virtual world, but with how we are progressing with VR that seems like a pale comparison to the experience of being able to interact with the world that you get out of VR. This I strongly feel will end up being a game changer especially when they manage to get it down to a size the will easily fit in some ones living room. It should be damn cool.

Wow I wanna try this so badly. This is one of those things that when I first VR technology I hoped that someone was creating to push the field forward but I wasn't quiet sure any one was as this is the first time I have seen it but wow this is so cool. I love the idea of being able to explore your environment and to change where you are going while wearing a headset the ability to move around and "explore" is all I have ever found missing when I have explored VR. The ability to make this a marketable thing is crazy and its the perfect piece of hardware to complete the Virtual reality world. I just wonder what designers and creators of virtual reality games will do with it and what the things are that we can't even imagine will be when they get their hands on such a device and what will they come up with next to further the field.
