Business Insider: One of the biggest job stresses is having to fight with competitors and coworkers for clients, commissions, and recognition.
Rather than focusing on your own work, highly competitive fields force you to be constantly aware of what everyone else is doing.
Competition is particularly acute in visible, hard-to-break-into industries like entertainment and sports, jobs that offer lucrative payouts to top performers, and coveted positions with only a limited number of spots.

Although the acting industry may be much more competitive than ours, we still work in a fairly competitive industry. I will admit, certain parts of our industry are more competitive than others. Perhaps the most competitive field is any design field. Trying to get design jobs can be easy in small regional or educational theaters but once you try to work up into the big repertoire theater or even Broadway, you can find yourself competing for the job. The upside to this level of theater is that there are usually a lot of shows very frequently so there tends to be a lot more work if you do not get the first show. After a while, if your lucky you will develop a reputation and instead of having to go out looking for shows to work on they will come to you in the form of a direct job offer. It is naturally a very competitive industry on every level. Shows are constantly competing with each other as well as theaters and crews. It may not be the most competitive industry but if you would like to enter it, you better be ready for a little competition.
Who knew that these jobs were so competitive? It is crazy to think that something I have wanted to do for so long is so competitive. Sound design is a reasonably new profession in the world of business. Before, people like the lighting designer would perform the task of the sound designer. Now that the field has expanded, this has changed and because it is such a new field it would make sense that it is competitive. People want to make their mark on this industry and in order for sound designers to do so it requires them to be aggressive. One thing that all these jobs have in common is the element of competition. There will always be someone out there to try and one up you. The reason that I appreciate this challenge is because it motivates you to do your best. For me, when there is competition, my efforts to put my best foot forward will end up yielding the best results possible.
