Why I Lay Out Dovetails with Dividers

Popular Woodworking Magazine: Rob Cosman showed me how to lay out dovetails using dividers about 12 or 13 years ago, and I have never looked back.
I’ve caught a lot of crap for using the divider method from fellow hand-tool woodworkers who say that laying them out by eye is much faster. I don’t disagree.
However, there are some advantages to taking the extra time and use dividers.

It shouldn’t be seen as a crime to lay out your dovetails by eye, but it may take away from the precision of your work. Yes, using dividers takes more time. But that doesn’t mean it’s better or worse- it’s just a different way of going about laying out dovetails. Focusing on how long woodworking takes rather than the quality of the craft seems to be the true discussion here, as many are seemingly focused solely on the amount of extra time it takes to lay out dividers. Personally, I find that taking a short amount of additional time can save me huge amounts of extra work in the future if something goes awry, and it may be worth it to attempt if you find yourself knocking the divider method before you try it. Either way, a craftsman always has his or her own way of doing things to construct their work, and it seems to me that Schwarz it only trying to open the minds of the woodworking community to being more accepting of this particular method.
