10 Things You're Doing at Work That Say "I Don't Care"

Fast Company | Business + Innovation: We’ve all been at a restaurant where the waiter forgets your special request and looks as though he’d rather be just about anywhere else in that moment. Then there’s the grocery store clerk who avoids eye contact and is annoyed with your coupons. Clearly these people don’t care, but is it possible we’re sending similar signals at work without realizing it?

Most of these seem like things people naturally do when they are busy and trying to cut corners to get everything done. However, I think what this article points out very well is that the people you work with don’t see everything you do, they just see what you did when working with them, and if that includes inattention and rushing through work, they are likely to read laziness rather than business. In my psychology class we discussed the fact that people tend to be more likely to assume other people’s actions are based off personality rather than circumstance, even though they see the situational causes for their own actions. This means that if someone isn’t careful, their tiredness or business could be read as a reflection on their character, regardless of the reasons for their actions. It is worth keeping that in mind to avoid having a bad reputation stick. Keeping these ten simple things to avoid in mind could be helpful for that when someone has a lot on their mind.
