What Rocco Landesman Should Talk About Next
NYTimes.com: "Rocco Landesman probably doesn’t need a new nickname, but it’s tempting to give him one anyway: Cowboy Mouth. With thanks to Sam Shepard and Patti Smith, the authors of a play of that title, it seems a useful handle for the outspoken chairman of the National Endowment for the Arts, whose fondness for cowboy boots was well known when he was the head of Jujamcyn Theaters.

You know what? Truth hurts sometimes. It might really upset some people to hear it, but not listening won't keep it from being true. My limited experience with theatre administration echoes this stork's-head-in-the-ground approach, especially when it came to fund-raising. Board members and ADs never wanted to hear or talk about how dire a deficit was. It was left to the General Managers and Managing Directors to hash out how to pay for something. It always irked me to see the so-called Leaders of a particular arts institution clamping their hands over their ears to "Stop spoiling their playtime!" (That's a real quote, from a real artistic director; I kid you not). It's a relief to see one of these leaders standing up and talking about a potential future reality that we'd all best at least be prepared to have to deal with.
