There have been quite a lot of reports saying that he was just having trouble performing the part, being offensively off-pitch and not having the stamina to perform 8 shows a week. Even if he just wasn't confident/capable to play the role (whether he was fired or left the show of his own accord is not really anyone's business), I'm sure that the production team is panicking at the moment to find the replacement Georges. I do wonder how much dip in the weekly gross the production will face with Jeffrey Tambor leaving the production, as I'm not quite sure how many people will go see La Cage to specifically see him in the lead role. The guessing game of who will next play Georges will be a fun one. I wouldn't mind seeing Kelsey Grammer return to the role since he was very charismatic in the role.
