Lightwright Touch iPad App Released in iTunes App Store

iSquint.net: "Yes, the day has come. When the iPad was announced over a year ago, people went ecstatic. Then came the dreamers, what can we do with the iPad, how can it make our lives easier? In the lighting industry, it was easy, put Lightwright onto the iPad. It took almost a year since the iPad was released into the wild, but that dream has become a reality.

I think this is going to be a very useful tool for lighting designers and MEs working on shows. It would be great to have your dynamic lightwright file wherever you are in the theatre. My one reservation with this is potentially how fragile the iPad seems to me. I feel like it wouldn't take to much to crack the screen and if you are taking this along catwalks or setting it on a road case the potential for damage is high. With that in mind I still think it will be a very useful tool. I just with I had an iPad or the same app but for iPhone.

This is great that they finally released this. I think that it is a bit too pricy with the cost of the program that runs on the computer high. This is a tool that I wonder how well it works and if people will just use their laptops instead of using a iPad. I would like to get my hands on this program to see how well it works on the ipad. We have an iPad here at the Carnegie Mellon School of Drama lighting department and I wonder if it will be installed on that iPad and we will be able to use and see if it is worth it. I know of people with iPads and they work in lighting and said that they don’t want it.

I can see why people would want to have Lightwright on the iPad, it certainly makes sense to be a new app. However, nowadays so many designers and ME's have their laptops with them in the theatre, so they don't really have the need to. I can't say for sure because I don't have a tablet device (or any type of touchscreen device for that matter), but when dealing with a data entry program like Lightwright or Excel, I would still greatly prefer to have a keyboard to make the data entry easier. Most designers and ME's will probably then just reach for their laptop instead of the iPad.
