Sapsis Rigging Builds Home for Last Supper Clone
Stage Directions: "The Park Armory in New York City is a challenging venue—it’s essentially a great big warehouse that’s more than 100 years old. Finding pick points for your rigging is nigh impossible, so often you end up having to build a structure inside the structure. We’ve written about installs there in the past, and Sapsis Rigging continues to do great things in the space. They recently built the support structure for a multimedia exhibit that was a clone of the replica of the Refectory of the Santa Maria delle Grazie in Milan that displays da Vinci’s famous Last Supper mural.

This set up seems incredible, it makes sense that in old buildings you would need to build something (another structure or what have you) so that you can have the appropriate pick points that you need. But the way that this article describes the Sapis rig is awesome. The fact that it is an exact clone of the Refectory of the Santa Maria delle Grazie, is a feat. I wish the article could have had pictures but Im sure that the artist would have had something to say about that. Im intrigued to meet Bill Sapis, and see what he has to say on the matter of this project. I think that it is a very interesting concept to have to build the type of structure they did and Im sure do all of the time.
I find it somewhat strange that they uses a venue that would require you to build a structure to do any type of rigging. I just don’t get why they wouldn’t use another place. The reason might be that location of it offsets the price of doing this or the rent might be supper low so then it is offsets this cost. I guess if you could build a structure inside of another building you can make it the way your want, not the way building designers thought the building should be used. The fact that they are building a replica of another building is very cool but I would love if they were to show more photos of the exhibit.
