The Book of Mormon, the Broadway musical by the creators of South Park, isn't anti-Mormon, it's anti-stupidity
Slate Magazine: "On a Monday afternoon in late January, Trey Parker and Matt Stone crammed a few dozen people into a rehearsal space on 42nd Street in New York to watch a 25-minute preview of their upcoming Broadway show, The Book of Mormon. The audience consisted of friends, production staff, students, bloggers, and journalists—but, notably, no representatives from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. It was pretty clear why. 'You'll know it's done when you hear the word cunt and everyone bows,' said Stone.

It's a good thing for people to see that before getting offended, wait and see what they are really saying. So many people get offended by South Park, but this article makes a good point: they are not attacking a religion, but instead they are attacking aspects of a religion that has become skewed over time. The show does point out the positive aspects of religions, as quoted in this article, and it is unfortunate that many people miss these points that are made due to the anger they already feel from the offensive jokes that were told. Hopefully this musical will be able to again achieve this balance, and to hopefully reach many audiences.
This is great. I am really looking forward to seeing this show and hearing about how the Mormons take the show. After living in Utah for 5 years I feel that Mormon culture is a large scam and run just like a large corporate system. I just don’t know if this show might be censored or overly edited. I hope it does not get edited because some of the things that Mormons do need to be exposed and thrown right back in there face. I hope that the production does it justice and makes it the best show that it can be, realistic and true. I have been hearing a lot of buzz about this show just like spider-man; I just hope that it is not the next one of those type of shows that never gets off the ground.
I for one am very excite for this production. I am a long time fan of South Park and Avenue Q and I enjoy that sense of humor. It may be a good fit for me but are there enough people like me to make this show profitable? I am a little worried because of the pre-mature closure of Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson which closed in January at a loss. It was a different show but it was quite racy and moderately offensive. I think Book of Mormon will have enough initial publicity because of its creators but from my observations, offensive shows aren't extremely successful on Broadway but I sincerely hope book of Mormon will prevail.
