Backstage: "It's a rags-to-riches story with sex, drugs, vast wealth, and family tragedy. Perfect material for an opera.
Still, Britain's venerable Royal Opera raised some eyebrows when it announced that its next production would be based on the short, sensational life of Playboy Playmate–turned–tabloid superstar Anna Nicole Smith.

This article thoroughly disappoints me and hits upon a topic that I've commented on here before: theatre for entertainment rather than for art. I suppose that this is similar to the production of good movies and bad movies, but I feel that the art of theatre is such a rare and beautiful creation that should not be tampered with just to generate popularity from entertainment leeches. What I despise most about this article is the quote that Smith's story is, "absurdly beautiful...hysterically funny and heart-wrenchingly sad." I never thought that I would see a day in which a reality TV and entertainment star became the source of inspiration for an opera.
