Berkeley Rep takes spotlight as Broadway star
SFGate: "Berkeley Repertory Theatre is fast emerging as one of Broadway's most important 'farm teams,' and that's good news not only for the East Bay theater, but perhaps for Bay Area theater in general."

I am always ready to celebrate the decentralization of New York as the primary culture hub of our country. Even if the only way Berkeley Rep is getting a positive reception is because New York is picking up their productions, I'm at least glad that the Bay Area is getting recognition for its ability to create original work.
I think that this article really points out the positive results that affect the entire theatre community once one particular theatre gets a reputation. Like it or not, we have to accept that New York money and pick ups carries a lot more weight than in-town money for a lot of companies. This isn't to say that New York pockets are limitless (like Las Vegas pockets can be...) but the opportunity for recognition and royalties are a lot more likely.
