World’s biggest kinetic shutter LED wall to offer 30K visuals
www.avinteractive.com: The centrepiece will be the Mirage 4.0 LED video wall, which will feature the “world’s fully kinetic shutter system of this scale”. With the shutter open, the screens create a hyper-realistic 270° virtual environment comprising more than 3,000 tiles offering a combined 30K resolution and more than 100 million pixels.

I think this is a fantastic development in technology, the fact that the screens cover 270 degrees is absolutely crazy to me. I have to say seeing technology like this reminds me of a short story I read several times in high school called The Veldt. The way it relates to this is really just through the development of full surrounding screens for entertainment and I can’t help but wonder how close we are to being able to build something similar to the technology in The Veldt. A room full of screens that blend together so well it creates a fully immersive experience. I’m curious what the difference is between a normal screen wall and a kinetic LED shutter wall. I suppose it really makes sense for a place like this to have surround sound too, I’m glad it does. If I’m ever in New York City I’ll absolutely make an effort to check this place out, it looks fantastic.
This is so awesome! I would love to experience this in person. This is what I think the thing about live performance is, you cannot really recreate it on a screen. That is the value that it can bring to people. Ironically, this is a screen experience but you need to be there in person to experience it. This reminds me of a ride at Universal Studios in CA in the Harry Potter world where you are riding in seats held by a mechanical arm and you move along on a track. Sometimes the track rolls in front of a miniature IMAX screen and the mechanical arm holding your seat will tilt in the direction you are flying. Anyways, that was the closest I have ever felt in my entire life to really flying (aside from when I went paragliding and I was ACTUALLY flying). I seriously want to see a mini IMAX screen incorporated into theater. Then people could feel like they are flying- we could also project all sorts of things onto it and create a variety of environments.
Every time I hear about new and innovative LED setups I get really excited. Stuff like this or the dome in Las Vegas are so cool. A little odd sure, but I really enjoy seeing how something with the level of control that LED screens have are used to approach new techniques of displaying graphics. This reminds me a lot of cinerama- the old technique of a 146 degree screen meant to display immersive footage, with each facet of the screen pointed towards the audience. I believe there are really only three theatres displaying it left? I really really want to see it, and I think its cool how we have a sort of modern take on it now with LED screens. I think its really interesting how cinerama was specifically invented to compete with TV, and now we have similar new tech coming out, but its often intended for concerts rather than movies.
