StubHub Partners With Broadway Theater Owner Ambassador Theatre Group
I'm curious to see how this will affect ticket prices. I hope that it somehow helps keep ticket prices down, rather than making them blow up. I will be really sad if ticket prices for these theaters skyrocket, because the Walter Kerr Theatre is one of the theaters involved in the agreement. Hadestown is playing there and it's my favorite show. I've already seen it twice in that theater and would go back in a heartbeat. Theater is meant to be accessible to the community. I understand why it's become a business, it allows us to have the large scale shows that we do on Broadway. It's really cool that we can have so many high-quality productions in such close proximity to each other. It makes it more feasible for someone to take a weekend NYC trip and see a few shows at once. But it is a shame when that causes inaccessible ticket prices.
This is interesting to me. Different Broadway shows and theatres use a number of different vendors for tickets, but I wonder how the addition of a major player in the ticket game like StubHub will change the accessibility, availability, and cost of tickets. Personally, I don’t think I’ve ever really heard a good thing about StubHub, so I am a little skeptical, and feel as though it will not be the best in the long run for people trying to see shows. The fear is always that one company might control it all and a monopoly will form and make Broadway terribly exclusive, but I feel like that is far from happening. This does, however, feel like a step in that direction, so I wonder how other theatre owners will respond to this partnership. Looking at the list of the 16 theatres included in this partnership, I was surprised to find the Emerson Colonial Theatre on the list. Being from Boston, I’ve been to the Colonial on many occasions, and one thing I always liked was that they had their own ticketing system. I wonder how the move to StubHub will affect buying tickets and the customer service for any issues involved.
